I have been working as a professional double bass player since 1994.

I grew up in Belfast and I am now based in Calderdale in the North of England.

Throughout my career I have worked in a wide range of styles. I started out playing tuba at the age of 8. By the age of 15 I had done grade 8 and had started to teach myself bass guitar. At the age of 17 when I should have been studying a bit harder for my ‘A’ levels I was working with a blues band playing pubs and clubs. While studying tuba at university I taught myself double bass and within 6 months I was asked to join the eclectic, acoustic band 'Watercress'. We then spent the next 8 years touring and recording. 'Watercress' recorded an album and 3 E.P.'s and toured relentlessly throughout the UK, Ireland, Europe, Scandinavia, USA and Canada. We did a lot of live TV and radio, several tour supports for acts including, 'The Levellers', 'Duran Duran', 'Sebadoh' and Ian Dury. Some of the festivals we played at included Rosskilde (Denmark), Bergen (Norway), Pheonix (UK), Witness (Ire), Midem (France) Milwaukee Summerfest, NY and Boston Fleadhs (USA) as well as playing in venues such as The Brixton Academy, Glasgow Barrowlands, Manchester Academy and The House of Blues in Boston.

During my time with 'Watercress' I also worked with harpist/singer/songwriter, Ursula Burns. This involved recording and playing several festivals including Glastonbury (acoustic stage) and Dranouter (Belgium). While working on a recording session for ‘Watercress’ in Brighton I was asked to record a few tracks for 'Bad Manners' in the 911 studios, Cowfold. In 1998 I did a short tour of France with a trio playing improvised drum and bass music. This led me to recording and gigging with the dance act 'Basic' in 2001. At around this time I was playing with my own indie band, 'Drat'. 'Drat' were in the ‘Pavement’/‘dEUS’ vein. We toured the UK and Ireland, supported the likes of 'Gallon Drunk', 'Yo La Tengo' and recorded a live BBC radio session.

These days I mainly do session work and play jazz with several northern based bands. They include 'Tessa Smith and the Applejacks', 'The Black Sheikhs',  'Brian Acton Quartet', 'Powder Jazz Band', 'Soots' and my original jazz band 'The Trashcan Collective'.
